January 03, 2018

On November 15, Motorola announced a new moto mode to it family. The Polaroid Insta-share printer mode.

What is a Moto mod?

In September of 2016 year. Motorola introduced its Z series, which had a modeable option. The modes are external case-like accessory to your phone you can snap on via strong magnets. The variety of physical gadgets includes external speaker, battery, camera, projector and the new addition Polaroid printer mod.

Release

The new mod is Polaroid insta share, and was announced on  officially 15.11.2017. Rumors about this mod started circulating during Mobile World Congress (27.02-02.03.2017 in Barcelona). The market release date for this mod was on 17.11.2017 and its price was 199$.

About the Mod:

The mod is powered by internal battery with 500 mAh, the battery will last up to 20 prints. It has physical shutter that is supposed to make the experience easier. The mod connects to the phone via magnets, so no bluetooth  or wi-fi set up is needed. You can print photos from gallery, Instagram, Facebook and Google photos. As well as taking instant photos. This mod unlike others does not cover the camera as you can see in the photos. This is because the mod uses the camera on the phone for photos.
The printer works with the standard for Polaroid printers 5×8 cm ( 2×3") sticker paper. The polaroids inside use zero ink technology with different heat impulses to make the colors. The paper is smudge-proof and water-resistant. This mod is supposed to work with all models from the Z series, including the one from next year. The mod has an app that prompts you what to do after connecting the mod to the phone, in the app you can edit your photos, add borders, text and stickers.

Something not many people are a fan of is the added thickness of 20.4mm and 188gr, and the way it looks - like a box. Another negative that +Michael Fisher (Mr.Mobile) on +YouTube  has found is the low contrast and faded colors (which in general is to be expected from a mini/bluetooth printer). Reliability issues with the mod itself. Since the printer uses heat impulses you can not use it in cold weather (in negative degrees).
This is how the mod looks:

And in case you are wondering why the mod looks familiar its because the mod looks like tweaked Polaroid zip instant printer i will let you judge for yourself:

What do you think of the new mod is it worth its price? Do you prefer the Zip printer? I would love to try this gadget.
